So your parents had genes for it, but because the genes were recessive, they didn't show up in anybody. Yup! I come from a family that has all dark haired people in it, but in each part of my extended family, the first born in each family (my cousins' families) has red hair, light skin and freckles. I am one of them, LOL! We have a Scottish heritage and its not uncommon for that to happen. As far as your little brother being normal that is open speculation. I had a little sister and little brother growing up. I didn't think they were normal. It's not so much your hair color as it is skin tone. If you have extremely pale skin and very red hair (like me) I tend to look like a tomato, brings out the red tone in my skin. Red I have actually found I can get away with, as long as it's blue bases red and not orange based. (like dark wine tones, ruby, magenta, burgundy, etc.) I personally don't were the color pink, so I don't know how it would look on me but I have seen strawberry blonds wear pink on their upper half and look ok. I also tend to avoid light pastel shades of colors like blue, yellow, and orange. Especially yellows, I think it makes me look jaundice. But if you wear it and you think you look good and you get compliments, then wear it with confidence, that's how most fashions look good on people.

well it is really hard to say. I know they say one is dominant but not sure which. I know in my dads family red and blonde are more common but there are people with brown and black. On my moms side brown is the common color but there are a lot of blondes being born lately on that side as well. In my moms family brown eyes are dominant but on my dads side everybody seems to be born with blue even when one parent has brown (usually that married into parent). I have a son with brown eyes and a son with blue/hazel eyes and I have blue and their dad has hazel.

Both my parents have green eyes, I have green eyes, but my sister has blue eyes.

One thing to take into account with the red hair gene though is that it is often accompanied by a fair skin/freckles gene, and is rarely split while crossing over during meiosis. This particular trait isn't associated with the normal freckles/ fair skin trait. It's a very special trait, which is why most people with red hair have pale skin and freckles.

An interesting case involves my husband and his sister. They are from El Salvador. Both their parents have dark tan skin, dark eyes and hair, your typical Hispanics. However, my husband and his sister have the brightest red hair you have ever seen, pale skin, and tons of freckles. You'd think they were Irish until you hear their names! Now, his sister married a white guy. However, he has no red hair in his family. It pretty much looks like they kidnapped their kids. The kids have dark skin, dark eyes and hair, just like her parents. Without the red hair trait to cover it up, that's what her kids were programmed to be!

You need to definitely go to a salon to have it done. Red hair is the toughest to bleach because of all the red pigment in it. When you bleach hair, what you're trying to get out is the red so naturally red hair is harder to bleach. DON'T DO IT AT HOME. You don't know the correct measurements and ratios of bleach to cream, etc. You will end up damaging your hair and turning it bright orange.

Go to a salon and bring a picture of exactly what color you want. If you don't have a picture ask the salon if you could look at one of their hair color books/magazines to show them what color you're wanting to go. Because if you don't have a picture, you risk it coming out different than what you pictured in your mind :)

You don't need to wait for it to fade any longer, especially if it's only three weeks. Red hair dye fades the quickest because the red molecule isn't able to fit completely through the cuticle of the hair and slips out, so if the fading is what you want to change the brand for, then don't worry about it. I get my hair dyed every month and a half to two months, but in between I use a toner to keep the redness in.

I think that the real reason is because true red heads are rare and genetics are making it even more so due to it being recessive in most cases.

For people dying their hair, most people look fake unless they have the right complexion for it. It is really hard for most girls to have red hair that fits their complexion. Some people can pull it off, but it is usually those girls with a hint of red in their hair already (like me, I just dye it a little brighter and constantly told how I have such beautiful NATURAL red hair).

Red hair looks best if it looks natural. It is so esy to come out pink, purple and orange and I think this scares girls away from the color. It can be too brassy as well, and not complement the girls features.

One other reason is because red hair is possibly the hardest color to sustain. Take it from me, it fades so fast, that you have to use expensive shampoos/conditioners in order for most of the color to stay, and on some girls, it still will fade alot. Its a hard color to maintain, so maybe girls are wanting an easier solution?

I like your hair now, and the other one looks kinda fake. I suggest you put some lemon juice in your hair and then go out in the sun for like an hour and your highlights will stand out and look natural. Also, you could put some vineger in your shampoo and wash it into your hair, rinse, then go out in the sun to dry it. I prefer this because you will make your highlights stand out, yet it still looks natural. Redheaded people stand out. They are unique. Why would you wanna follow the crowd?

I'm a redhead, I need it cleared up. Is it attractive? Some guys like it others don't who I know. Some guys say i look hot except for the hair and others say it's what makes me look attractive. I don't understand??!!!!!!

well it is really hard to say. I know they say one is dominant but not sure which. I know in my dads family red and blonde are more common but there are people with brown and black. On my moms side brown is the common color but there are a lot of blondes being born lately on that side as well. In my moms family brown eyes are dominant but on my dads side everybody seems to be born with blue even when one parent has brown (usually that married into parent). I have a son with brown eyes and a son with blue/hazel eyes and I have blue and their dad has hazel.

It depends on the entire family traits. My husband and I both have naturally brown hair, however our son was born with bright red hair. You can not just simply predict what an unborn child will look like.

The thing with brown hair and red hair is, that brown is a dominant trait, yes, but red hair is actually a different allele. Getting red hair is a recessive trait, you have to get a gene from both parents. However, if a person with red hair has a baby with someone who does not have red hair, say a blond, the baby could have blond or brown hair because the red hair trait would have no affect without its counterpart.

Feckles are a dominant trait, so there is a 50/50 shot of getting the gene from one parent. The odds can go up depending on the allele make up of each parent. Example, both my parents have freckles. My sister and I also have freckles. I either have 2 genes for freckles, or just one maybe. My husband also has freckles, so the odds that our kids would have them are VERY high (if we had kids).

As for eyes, it depends on what you are starting with. Brown is dominant over green and blue, but green is dominant over blue. There are actually 4 different genes on 2 different chromosomes that code for eye color, so that's why we all have varying shades of colors. Both my parents have green eyes, I have green eyes, but my sister has blue eyes.

One thing to take into account with the red hair gene though is that it is often accompanied by a fair skin/freckles gene, and is rarely split while crossing over during meiosis. This particular trait isn't associated with the normal freckles/ fair skin trait. It's a very special trait, which is why most people with red hair have pale skin and freckles.

An interesting case involves my husband and his sister. They are from El Salvador. Both their parents have dark tan skin, dark eyes and hair, your typical Hispanics. However, my husband and his sister have the brightest red hair you have ever seen, pale skin, and tons of freckles. You'd think they were Irish until you hear their names! Now, his sister married a white guy. However, he has no red hair in his family. It pretty much looks like they kidnapped their kids. The kids have dark skin, dark eyes and hair, just like her parents. Without the red hair trait to cover it up, that's what her kids were programmed to be!

That is hard to say. Red hair is common among the Scots and Irish but was also found among the Vikings (that's how Erik the Red got his name)

It is a trait not normally found in non-white people, but whether it originated specifically among the Gaels rather than the Celts is one of those questions whose answer is speculative at best.

You don't need to wait for it to fade any longer, especially if it's only three weeks. Red hair dye fades the quickest because the red molecule isn't able to fit completely through the cuticle of the hair and slips out, so if the fading is what you want to change the brand for, then don't worry about it. I get my hair dyed every month and a half to two months, but in between I use a toner to keep the redness in.

Ha, that Joe guy is right. I personally don't like redheads, but it all depends on your face. A more natural red would be better. Or a mix between red and brown I don't know what you would call it. I don't think freckles go good with red hair it just makes them look gross. Blue or green eyes although I'd go for green would be the best. Big noses also dont go good with red hair especially fat or long ones. A cute pointed button nose would be the best.

I really like your hair now but I understand why you would like that other look.My suggestion is that having your hair dyed could damage it a lot but if you really want it bring that picture (the second one) to where your hair is getting dyed,they will dye it the way it's seen hopefully and there you go!

I like your hair now, and the other one looks kinda fake. I suggest you put some lemon juice in your hair and then go out in the sun for like an hour and your highlights will stand out and look natural. Also, you could put some vineger in your shampoo and wash it into your hair, rinse, then go out in the sun to dry it. I prefer this because you will make your highlights stand out, yet it still looks natural. Redheaded people stand out. They are unique. Why would you wanna follow the crowd?

You can go to a beauty supply store and mix a color charm yourself and add your own peroxide, using two or more different colors to get the effect you like or you can get a boxed dye and hope for the best. Loreal has come intense reds. I believe they have a line specifically for red.

and don't listen to Chris above me... People that don't know, shouldn't give such advice. If you bleach your hair first it will turn pink or worse... fall out! Red dye responds better to a dark base...

Since you have naturaly dark hair, I would bleach it first or the color may not take. I think the brand name was 'punky colors' that made the last good fire engine red I saw, and should be availeable at Hot Topic or any other goth/punk supply shop.

If that doesn't work for you then your best bet is to go to a beauty shop and have a pro do it for you. The know all the secrets. Try the beaty supply store first. Ask them for help. They will give you a much better suggestion. With your color of hair you will need to strip it first. Bleach it out to almost white then apply your color. good luck.

You sound like one of my nightmare clients waiting to happen. Doing things like that at home is dangerous and often leads to a costly session in a salon trying to fix what you have done if it can be fixed at all. I am currently waiting to see the end result of a lady who tried to bleach her own roots. She came in about 4 hours ago and we still have a way to go to match the blonde with the brown, ginger and various yellows and orange she had when she came in.

I like wispy bangs thinned out and cut from way back on top. Bangs should come down over your upper cheek bone, and brush them to the side.

get longer side swept bangs, they aren't very hard to maintain. just make sure if you want them to still go behind your ears to let your stylist know. it is really nice that way, and they aren't even that long.

If you're a natural redhead and you dye your hair black, you'll look like a corpse because your skin color is way too light to match with black hair. It's really not very attractive. Anyway, red hair is beautiful! Be happy with it!

It really depends on the shades of each color. For example: If the blue is significantly darker than the red you're going to use A LOT of red to get it to balance out. I think your best bet would be to just go and buy a bottle of purple. That way you don't waste your red and blue dyes in case you want to use them later.

Not a good idea.

Because the hair dyes are semi-permanent they fade at different rates and you will find the blue fading to green faster than the red fades out.

If you were looking at permanent hair dyes, you may have a different answer. but the vivid colors are not permanent colors.

It would also be cheaper to buy one hair dye color, the color you want purple - (manic panic, crazy colors, special effects) than mixing the two together.

Mixing the two may look OK for a short period of time, but will end up with a disappointing result in a week or so.

I thinks it's mainly the way you carry yourself. If changing your image changes your confidence then yes it can have an effect. BUT you can learn to change your confidence without changing your image. I also have to say some people have a stereotypical look that may automatically put them in the "tease" category ex glasses (I wear them for reading so I'm not saying anything bad), different clothing that's not considered the "norm", and basically anything that's different from your peers.

I completly agree with some of the other comments, having red hair is just an easy target. I too am a fellow red head *wooot* and i get people just walking past me shouting the usual ginger comments... it doesnt help that its big, curly, red hair, at my school the only hairstyle is blonde and straight. Wash ONCE A WEEK. I know, it may be hard, but you have to. Or get a dry shampoo and use it whenever, just wear a cap in the shower. When you wash, wash with cold water, and just condition. Shampoo only when necessary. As long as you don't use too much product it should be fine.

Also, I like your idea, so top it off with the extremes (you can find them anywhere really, not just alternative shops) and put the left over in your shampoo. Use heat protective products if you go out in the sun or use heat styling, etc. Red is the hardest to keep. I know. Mines usually fades in one wash. I have read all 7 pages of questions on this topic and I am still at a loss. 11 days ago I had my hair professionally dyed, I waited 4 days before washing it and have only used Redken color extend products. Colorshine by Sebastian!!!......it is a product that will stain your hair....you apply onto damp hair, wrap your hair/head in a bag, and let it heat up (if you have a professional head dryer great) if not, use a blow dyer on hot.....for twenty minutes and you will have the most incredible vibrancy and it will last alot longer! Plus the bottle of colorshine is quite big, so you have at least 15 applications (the more stained red your hair is....the more likely it is to stay true to color)

A hair rep in a beauty supply store, that sells Colorshine, will direct you to the appropriate red color. If I saw your color, I could tell you exactly which one to get.

Or if you decide not to color in a salon again why don't you use Henna.?? HennaLucent can be bought at Sallys and it comes in a great red shade. Its pretty much natural, easy to do, but does stain towels so try not to make a mess. Follow the directions and your hair will feel pretty good.

I have used that product in my salons for years because I have patrons who love it.. and it works! One more idea, and that is you could go buy a color red and use half shampoo and half of the product mixed like the directions say too and soap cap your hair. The ends will grab faster so watch where you put it first.. This will extend the red a bit and brightened it up. Good luck!
