How hard is it to dye medium brown hair to a light red?

if you've ever seen the movie Under The Tuscan Sun with Diane Lane, i love her hair color. its red but looks brown sometimes. i know its got some blonde highlights in it but i like the red. my hair is medium brown. it already has blonde highlights in it. would it be hard to get that red color to look natural and actually keep its color instead of fading out??

It is a gamble on do it yourself lightening and who wants to chance a crazy color? Then as soon as you get it done have someone help compare what your new color matches on the boxes. And get to the upkeep before your roots make it an issue.

Not hard at all, just by the light red color and apply. Remember color may take longer on some than the other. As you finish applying your color let it stay on until you see a difference.

I heard red fades pretty fast so I don't know if I should dye my hair red or not...because if I don't dye it red I'm probably just going to redye it back to brown again and get either highlights or lowlights. i dont think so...try a reddish-brown or brownish-red. dark red would just make you look like you're desperate for serious attention. that's not too good. try highlights or lowlights...im not sure about the dark red thing though...i suggest you don't do that...

It fades super quick. The first time you shower you will see it bleed.

I would not do it in the summer just because you'll be in pools, beach, etc. Also i tend to shower more then once a day in the summer so i would just wait a little. It bleeds to quick.

Wait until the fall it looks prettier then with the fall colors

I think it would be a good idea not to dye your hair at all during the summer, but if you do then red is probably not a good choice for a couple of reasons...

First of all, as you said, red is quickest to fade. Take into account the sun and sea and/or pool water and it'll fade all that more quicker.

Having said that, though, sometimes light-medium shades of brown (and definitely blonde, as you probably know) sometimes can turn greenish when exposed to chlorinated pool water. And, as with the red, the brown will also fade with sunlight and swimming, making it look dull.

So if you absolutely positively can't wait I'd say go with brown, but a better option would be to get a color gloss at a salon for a boost in color/shine for the time being.

i dont think its smart to dye AT ALL this summer. the heat of the sun will damage ur hair, and it will fade ur haircolor. wait till after summer.

Yes Definatly, i dye my Hair Regularly. When i first started to dye my hair i always were trying different colours, one of them being RED Which i think Looked Awesome on me. However work didn't seem to like it so i had to change. Now i just dye my hair Black. But Yes red is definatly a colour i would consider. Very Fiery and sexy :D

i think that sounds great depending on how light / dark your hair is [ like light ash blonde or dark mousy blonde ] dont go dark dark red if your hair is really light etc but i think its a great idea and with the image you have it will look great good luck

Yeah go for it, be aware that it will turn pink really quickly though and might bleed into the rest of your hair, make sure you use a permanent dye to avoid looking like candy floss.

yeah you could try a semi-permenant dye that washes out and it's better for your hair then permenant dye..And if you didn't like it any more you could always just cut your hair or it will fade out.

But if you do it red then make sure its a deep red and not washed out like my girlfriend had. She had to go back and get it done again. Looked bloody nice though.

i rekon..... not a bright red but a darkish kind of red/plum colour and instad of the ends get your hair layered and leave the top layers your colour and the underneath layers that redish colour. i have the image in my mind now... it'd look brilliant.

nooooo!!! I don't know who told you that but it is not true! Trust me, just dye it brown and make sure you choose a dark brown colour so the hair can actually absorb the colour; if you choose a light brown you might not see much of a difference between your blond hair and the brown.

I am a professional cosmetologist.

The reason you need red in the color when you are going darker is so that it won't turn green! When you bleached your hair, you pulled the red color that is naturally in everyones hair. So, you need to replace this. You dont need a RED red, just a little red added to your brown.

If you want a good result the best thing to do would be to go to a salon. Coloring your hair at home is kind of a hit/ miss situation. Chances are you might end up going there anyways if it doesn't turn out right!!

As for the color you would want to use... DON'T pick out a dark brown unless you want a DARK BROWN!! You hair is bleached! It is going to soak up whatever you put on it! Possibly even more (or.... "darker") than you are expecting, depending on how dry it is!!

My 3 year old has red curly hair. Before any real damage is done, what is the best way to care for it? I have hear baby shampoos aren't good for it because they dry too fast and dry out the hair. I've heard any shampoo is bad. I'm looking for a BRAND here in the US that doesn't cost an arm %26amp; a leg but I'm willing to pay up to about $15/bottle. Shampoo I doubt I'll be able to get away without baby stuff to prevent getting it into her eyes. So it's mainly a GREAT conditioner, and a shampoo to note for later. Thanks.

As for brands I recommend Devacurl (find it at Ulta). I think it costs like $12 a bottle, but it is very good. The book 'Curly Girl' by Lorraine Massey, which you can probably find at your library, is a great book on caring for curly hair. I personally don't use shampoo on my curly hair, except for non-sulfate shampoos occasionally, because they dry it out a lot. Devacurl's version is called Devacurl no-poo. Just scrub the scalp with conditioner to cleanse it and rinse. Distribute conditioner throughout the hair and detangle with a wide-toothed comb. Rinse 80% of the conditioner out and maybe add a light styling product. If you don't use shampoo you will have to avoid silicones (ingredients will end in -xane, -conol, or -cone) because they will build up on the hair.

i use dove damage repair, even though my curly hair isnt that damaged. it provides moisture, its cheap and it doesnt sting when i get it in my eyes (which i do a lot) leave in conditioner after a bath will help lock in moisture and tame the curls

if you dont want a baby shampoo, try aussie curl shamp %26amp; cond (sorry i dont know the exact name, i was in walmart yesterday looking for some and i dont remember the name of it) or dove intense therapy (dark blue bottle) I LOVE THAT STUFFFFF!!!! whatever you do, dont use pantene pro-v because it the protein breaks your hair and makes it brittle after using it for a while then makes it fall out.

or just try a shampoo %26amp; conditioner (not pantene) that is formulated for curly/thick hair.

That being said, unless you are using a lot of products in her hair, you could use a cheap conditioner like Suave Naturals to "wash" her hair. Then you could use a good conditioner from a natural food store to actually condition.

First time I dyed my hair from dark blonde (my natural color) to dark brown, I used Revlon Colorsilk *permanent* hair dye, and yet it faded to an ugly strawberry blonde in about 3 weeks.

Then I tried L'oreal superior preference permanent hair dye, basically the same color except an ashy-er brown, and switched shampoo to Tresemme colorthrive for brown/red treated hair to try to retain the color. That was about three weeks ago. The shade has only faded slightly - must be the shampoo - but I've started to notice that bright light and sunlight reflects an unnatural shade of red.

Is there any way I can get some sort of permanent color treatment for my hair where it won't turn red or fade out for at least a month or two? I would just redye my hair, but it's already starting to feel damaged and I'm worried if I re-dye it in the next month it would be really bad. Any over the counter permanent solutions that don't involve salons?

You need to go to a salon and have it done! IF you do not want to pay the price of a salon call up your local Beauty College they will color your hair at a discounted price! You do not want to keep coloring your hair constantly because it will become dry and unhealthy and start to break off! I know from past experience of coloring my hair! You need to go to Sallys Beauty Supply and ask them for a really good conditioner for your hair, you also need to stop blow drying it and get a really good leave in conditioner. Dont color your hair again for atleast another month if you can wait 2 months thats even better. Once you get it back in shape again then go have it professionally done even if you have to go to a beauty college to get it done! IF you continue doing it yourself at home you are going to keep breaking your hair off until it is super short and eventually starts falling out! I know several people who are hair dressers and work in salons I have also been coloring my hair for the past 7 years and I now go to a salon to have it done as it got to be too dry and damaged to do it myself anymore!

Either L'Oreal HiColor, or Feria's Power Reds. I've used both on my hair, which is resistant to dye since it's mixed (black/white/native american) hair. It can turn even jet black hair the clor of dye on the bottle. You can get L'Oreal HiColor at Sally Beauty Supply.

Long red curly hair?

Can I get some recomendations on products or types of salons for long red curly hair. If i leave it down to curl itself, most of it curls but then i have some random clumps that go stick straight, or it goes frizzy. How can I control this hair?! That and what kind of cuts should I use? Most salons treat it like straight hair and just want to straighten it, but that just damages it. I can't cut it too short because I'm in the military and have to put it up in a bun. Can anyone help?

When you have it down use TRESemme curl care. Put it in when your hair is towel dry. DON'T BRUSH IT that is the worst thing you can do. Get a shower comb that way you can comb it while it is still really wet and it won't mess up your curl.

Blow dry your hair after using curl care scrunch your hair as you blow dry, it works better. With curly hair get layers, long enough you can still put it up. That gives your hair more body.

The new shampoos they have out for the color of you hair will make your hair "pop" as for the curls Use a pick while your hair is wet towel dry and use some moose or frizzies and ask around for a good salon. Salons that tell you what kind of cut would be good for curly hair, not tell you it should be stright. layers would prob look great

My hair is long and curly. I'm kind of sick of always doing the same things. (1) combing through when wet, add a bit of mousse/gel and let dry naturally, (2) tying it in a high ponytail with a handful of hair left hnaging there on the right side (i part my hair a bit to the left. What else can I do...? I might trim it a bit to get even more curls (not that i don't have enough already.. ;D ) but i'm not rreally sure I want to colour it either because I get so many compliments on the naturel red already. Yeah, don't dye it. You're color sounds real pretty. I have curly hair also, and I do get sick of the same hair do always. When that happens I take my straightener and straighten it. I can then wear it down and it multiple different ways and it's not as bothersome as curly can be. And I only wash it like every 4 days so my hair stays straight till I wash it again, and that isn't so damaging.

I have long curly red hair too, and i use moose every day. I got my hair layered and that really brings out my curls. Just be sure to not get it cut too short or it will give you a fro!!

I have the same problem. But I remedy it by layering some of the top and sides. Not like cheezy 80's feathered hair, more like Jessica Simpson. I like to mix it up a bit. It looks nice when you put some Rusk smoother in it, then a moose or gel and then John Frieda "Shine Shock leave in glosser" then let it air dry your hair will sit better no matter where you part it. Next day I take my curling iron, not a flat iron, and straighten around the roots, pull straight down and curl back up on itself about half way up the length of your hair. And it is time consuming, I curl all of my hair piece by piece but believe me the look is so sexy and soft that you will have compliments no matter who you talk to. Now as far as your color is concerned, I am not an advocate to dying your hair, but sometimes it is necessary. So depending on your skin tone, if you are fair skinned, I would recommend some lighter red highlights. If you are medium skinned you can pull off some low lights with a darker red or even a medium brown. If you are olive complected or darker, I recommend bringing in a light blonde to accentuate your face.

I can feel you here because my hair is also red and naturally curly and comes down to my rump. What I do is try different parts--zigzags, whatever. I also alternate between blow drying my hair straight or creating waves. Sometimes an up sweep hairdo is lovely also. Whatever you do, don't start coloring until you've got some grey. If you want strawberry highlights that's okay but nothing major and always have it done professionally. We redheads have unpredictable color sometimes--we don't have the same results as blondes and brunettes with over the counter hair color.

Now if you want to dry your hair straight use the cool setting. When your hair is 80% dry (it looks dry but feels damp) start using a paddle brush while you blow dry to make it straight. Use a product like Biolage gelee to make it "set". Make sure to point the nozzle down on your hair instead of sideways or you'll create frizz. Finish with Redken Glass and a very light mist of Biolage hairspray for shine and hold. To achieve wavy hair, do the same but instead of using a paddle brush you can scrunch your hair with your fingertips OR fall asleep with your hair loosely braided for lovely summer locks.

red is usually harder to get in your hair, lots of people find that when they dye their hair that color it fades quickly, so if your hair is red now, you should have no problem with the brown and blonde highlights. i would get it done professionally though, if you mess it up, a color correction is expensive and takes forever!!!

If you want Blond Highlights you can either get them done or have someone do them..If you want to do it. I recommend going to a Hairstylist store and Buying Quick Blue,with a 20 Volume Developer. It will not make your hair Blue. It will strip your hair and make it lighter, getting rid of the red. IT should work rather quick. So if your pulling it through a cap you shouldn't have anything to worry about. If your having foils done, make sure that the person doing it is working fast. After use a protein pack to replenish the stripped hair. Bleaching can cause Dry brittle hair.

I have that problem too, but because I have naturally red low lights. If you are up for spending the money, when I want something other than red I go to the hair salon and my stylist mixes some kind of green tones or something into the hair dye and it neutralizes the red. I'm not exactly sure how she does it, because I am certainly not a hairdresser, but it always turns out. Unfortunately the only way to do it yourself that I have ever heard of is to bleach your hair, which will strip all the color out. I don't mess around with bleach on my own though. I have seen way to many oops from do-it-yourself bleach.

The best to do to get brown with blonde highlights is--- Put a Med. Ash Brown on your hair (ash color will cut the red) then you can highlight it. La Petite is a very good frosting kit. I have been frosting my hair for 5 years, and this has always done good. Have been coloring it for 20 years. Be sure and use a good conditioner after, Good Luck.

I have my hair colored pink at the moment. I am about to go over it with #66- True Red from Garnier. I'm curious, is this a winey shade, or a natrual reddish shade? I want to avoid winey shades at all costs. I'd like this color to turn out natural. Let me know the result you came out with and if you perfer this color to other red shades of box dyes.

If its professionally done with a good dye than no, most likely it will not turn pink but if you do it yourself with over the counter dye than yes it will turn pink after time.

Depends on what the base color of the dye was. Ones that are closer to maroon or blue based will tend to turn pinkish but ones that are orangey/gold based tend to turn like a faded orange color. Hair dye does fade and turn unappealing colors, but you can avoid that by keeping up with your hair. You can also add a bit of dye to your conditioner so it puts some pigment back into your hair each time you're in the shower.

I have seen a lot of people do this before and i think it looks really cool, Lacey from So You Think You Can Dance had red streaks in here hair and it looked really cool. I would have a professional do it for you so they put it in places that accentuate your features. I hope this helps and if you could post a pic of you after you get it done I would love to see. DON'T DO IT. It ends up looking brassy and cheap. I'd suggest getting chestnut streaks instead if you want a brighter look.

Red is good but key things to remember:

1. Red's an awkward colour to get rid of if you change your mind!

dont do it. First, off, red is difficult color to dye your hair. Either it fades quickly, or won't come out at all, no matter how much you dye or bleach it, there will always be a brassy hue to it. Secondly, in order to get the red streaks in your hair, the sylist will bleach your hair where the streaks will go to a really light color, so that the red will show up more. Needless to say, it'll really damage your hair and you'll have to get a lot cut off to repair the damage.

Just spent a bunch of money at a salon to get my hair recolored red. My hair was naturally red but is growing gray (sigh) and they were also touching up the roots. I helped her pick the color I wanted - a bright red (it fades so fast) and she did the roots first. I was the only one in the shop and her boss came in and met with my hair lady in a back room and I think they forgot me. It was on the roots for 45 min. She finally came back and ran it thru the rest of my hair and it was for 17 min.

End result is that I have bright copper orange roots (about 3 in.) and the rest of my hair is an ok darker red. It's ok but not great. The lady never admitted to blame but said I could come back and she would put another rinse on it if I wanted to.

What should I do? Go back and get the rinse? Could that make it worse? Will it wash out maybe in a few days?

I'm not one to freak out about my hair. It isn't that big a deal to me but I don't want to look like a clown either. THANKS!!

I would talk to the salon owner about the problem and see what can be done about it. It may fade out in a few days but then again maybe it will still look striped so yes I would go back and get it fixed. And there is nothing wrong with freaking out about your hair, it is a bag part of who we are and the image we project.

Go back and do the rinse if you don't like it make her fix your hair at no charge til it looks the way you like. Call the Manger if you have to.

You should go back and let her fix it. And do not pay a penny for it. If it's still not fixed, you can get all the color stripped out and re-colored, but that's REALLY damaging to your hair.

OMG!!!! The same exact thing happened to me on Saturday. I went to the salon to get my hair colored back to my natural color, dark auburn, I had highlights and was way too blonde. The colorist and I picked out a color close to my natural color. When it was time to get cut and blown out I nearly cried. My roots were BRIGHT ORANGE and the ends were a nice red. I have colored my own hair in the past so I ran to the drug store and bought Nice n Easy Light Ash Brown. Put that on for 25 minutes and I love the color. It is a dark auburn and I have gotten quite a few compliments at work.....I was even called a "Hot Mama"!

I have a dark/medium brown hair color, but my roots are an orange/reddish/golden color. It's not obvious, just looks like light its shining on it. I also have red tinted hair--- it's not natural, I dyed it red in the past. My natural hair color is medium brown. How can I remove this red tint and the red from my roots? I wanted to go to a lightish brown color, maybe a medium brown like my natural color, but when I go lighter, more red shows. I'm trying to get rid of it instead of going to a salon because I really can't afford to pay the money. Any suggestions?

so like i think it depends on what color your eyebrows are are they like dark brown or red? i think you should highlight your hair instead or dye it. my friend has red hair and she got like kinda coppery highlight and it looks really good. or if you want to dye it, you could try different looks with dye that like washes out after like a week or something. loreal stuff in the shiny foil work really well. unless you do it twice with not enough time in between. which is what i did and my hair stayed purpley for like 3 months!!

you could always highlight your eyebrows.....if not it wouldn't make that big of difference....if you don't like it, color it back.

try using a light red not red red but a diffrent color red with brown high lights or do ur hair brown with red high lights that would look good

Usually when i get my hair done at the hair dresser i get red bits at the front on the fringe and sides...

.. but last time i had red thin bits all over my hair... and i think i perfer my jet black hair with red at front...........its more effective.

all the times of dyin my front bits red has caused multi-tone reds..

where they hav faded differently and look different wen dyed ontop of each red. - it looks quite good actually.

BUT i was thinking of dyin it all back to black myself, then get red put at the front at the hair dressers. That way the old red wont effect it...

the first photo looks the best, i would try and keep it like that by just going over the red areas at the front to brighten them up again as they DO look faded in the last photo. there is a phrase used in my industry that states "colour will NOT lighten colour" which means that if you colour all of your hair black the you won't be able to go lighter without bleach. which means you would either have to bleach them to the red stage: http://photobucket.com/albums/j157/plati... which would be brassy without toner or bleach to the orange stage and THEN use a red haircolour. i have been in the business as a fully trained professional for 8 years so trust me when i say it will be a waste of money and make NO difference to your hair if you colour it black all over and then try and go over it with red.

Sounds good, but wait a few weeks inbetween the dying sessions. An even easier way to do it would be to just go to a hairdresser and have her do dye it black and then red, because she can do it all in one go.

I suggest letting your hairdresser do the whole thing for you. If you dye your whole head back to black then ask your hairdresser to put red in, it will take a lot of work for him/her to get the black out in the places you want red. But if you just let your hairdresser do the whol thing, they will know exactly what to do in order to get the results you want and cause the least amount of damage to your hair.

to be honest the black should really be done at the same time as the red.you see tint wont lift the tint out of youre hair so you may end up with red roots only im a hairdresser abd i deal with this a lot i would reccommend you go to a salon to have it done the dye is less harsh and you know you will get the rigght colour. good luck

Actually, I did this for my niece and it took 2 trips. Her hair was light red (lighter than yours, I think) on top and black on the bottom. I applied bleach and put her under the dryer until I saw some of the color lift out. I rinsed it, and It had a funky light orangish color, so I toned it down a little (to a light brown) and sent her home. She conditioned it frequently and heavily for a week, then she came to me again. She had decided by now to get a mixture of blonde and med.brown. So we used foils. Some with bleach and some with this med. brown color. Under the dryer again to get the bleach boosted. Her highlights went a really light and pretty blonde. It can be done, with patience. If you have Natural blond hair, you don't want to issue a red to your head.

Trust me... When the red fades it will either turn to an orange or a pink. Just the different levels of pigment... if you color it brown..wait about 2 days and then go with your burgundy on top. You better off to have gorgeous hair after that is done..

But because your hair is so light... I would say warm tones. Cause anything out of ordinary like bright red or pink, or purple or anything like that... even black will turn out a bit Grey and faded to an ugly color;

these will cause breakage, split ends, cause when coloring your hair is going through a burning process, it is pretty much burning the pigment to another color...

So I would recommend,that you go with a brown and then a red... cause after the red fades.. the brown will take over and the red will still show.

I wouldn't go as dark as that would probably go a strawberry blonde colour but if you are certain then buy an auburn colour that is designed to cover full grey ( this will be permanent) and this should be able to colour it in one step depending on how blonde you are. If you are a very pale blonde or if you are wanting a more subtle colour dye your hair a medium brown and then use a red wash/toner over the top.

The deeper the red, the more it fades. Red hair dye does not cling like other colors do. On a natural brunette, the fade is not so bad, but I would be very careful with natural blond hair. I would either go with a lighter strawberry, or have a pro do it if you really want it dark.
