What should I use to dye my hair red?

I have really dark brown hair, and I'm going for a brownish-red. Kind of like that chick from Will %26amp; Grace. lol Am I going to have to bleach my hair first for it to look right, or should I go a few shades lighter so it will show up on my dark hair the way I want it to, or what? I have no idea, I've never gone red before.

I would say go into a walmart or cvs and look at the boxes of hair color and they do a little color guide of your hair color and what your hair color will be after you use the dye.. just go look around and see what color you want to go with

Personally, I have brownish-black hair, and I've had good success with a very light strawberry blonde tone and also, hair colors that promise to color even the darkest tones red. They're a lot better than they used to be.

It would be best if you went to a salon and let them do it. I went from dark brown to blonde and now I'm red, but I wouldn't attempt to color my hair at home.
