because it is just easier to say. red hair falls into the basic hair color group (red, black, blonde, brown) instead of getting into the exact coloration people just like to generalize.

What does ginger look like? When you hear about hair colors you hear, blonde, brunette and red...I've never heard someone say, "oh you have a beautiful ginger hair color." That's probably why people just group it into red. I'm not even sure what ginger looks like. I hope I helped.
