I want to color my hair red...?

Like, a natural red. Auburn.

But I've heard it fades really fast.

Is there anything I can do to slow it down?

Also, should I do it myself or go to a salon?

And:

I never blow-dry, straighten, or use any other heat products on my hair.

I dyed my hair purple-burgandy a while ago, that faded to reddish pretty soon, and my hair still has a slight red tint.

If your hair isn't 3 shades lighter or darker than the hair color you want, you can probably do it at home safely.

The fact that you don't use styling aids bodes well for the longevity of your color, but also remember to use shampoos that are designed for color-treated hair. Also, try to wash your hair every other day instead of every day.

FYI: Red dyes fade the fastest because the color molecules are big and don't penetrate the hair shaft well. So, while getting it at a salon will probably make it look better, it won't help much in terms of it lasting longer--it's just how the pigments are.

Go to a salon it won't fade as fast and it'll look better. Auburn won't fade as fast as a purple or a bright red but it'll still fade all out a little early.

red does fade really fast, i'm not sure there is anything you can do to slow down how much it fades, GO TO A SALON, and be ready to keep going back to get it touched up. red is the hardest color to keep up cuz it's so obvious when it's growing out.

yeah, red hair fades crazy fast. i used to have it [for about two years] and i had to re-dye it every six weeks. but the best thing you can do is try and not spend too much time in the sun and use a color protection shampoo.

There are special shampoos you can buy for red colors. I can't remember the name, but there's more than one, and if you look hard enough, you'll find something that will work.
