there is a phrase used in my industry that is "colour will not lighten colour" in your case meaning that a red haircolour (that is lighter than your current haircolour) will not have the ability to lighten it. what you need to do is to firstly pre-lighten your hair (bleach it) more than likely to the orange stage if you wish your colour to be burgundy, orange is 1 stage lighter than what you wish to be so adding the darker colour will mean that it will then "take" but be careful of your roots as if they are already the colour you wish them to be then they should be left alone. thinking about it- if you said your roots turned out okay but not the rest of your hair then i will need to assume that this means that the reason your hair that didn't take is because it is already coloured, in this case you really DO need to go to a professional as you will need to use a colour remover to remove the artificial pigment put in by that colour before you can even bleach.

You'll have to pre-lighten it..
I would recommend the hairdressers, as most of the time it doesn't work properly, even if you do have to splash out. Its better than making a mess. I know that for sure, it's happened a few times now :P

E.A.S.Y.!!!
"Bleach" it first! It WILL instantly be "reddish"; though probably NOT the 'shade/colour' you want -which is OK; you then "dye" it to your liking!
Just remember to 'CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION'!!! (In my 20+ years of "hair dying", I've found the shampoos/conditioners meant for "dry/damaged" hair work BETTER than the ones for "colour treated" hair.) I also add a few drops(6-8) of "Tea Tree Oil"* to my shampoo to keep it from looking and feeling like 'straw'! You can also put a small bit(of T.T.O.) in your conditioner -but just a BIT(1-2 drops.).
(Did you know that most "Hair Dyes" have a "1-800" number on the box for you to ask questions such as this?)
Live fast %26amp; dye your hair!!! ;)
*The Tea Tree Oil smells 'funny' but the scent of your shampoo 'covers' it, don't worry...! And F.Y.I. you can buy it at most "Drug Stores". :)
How to dye black brown hair red-ish??
I dyed my hair a dark brown a few months ago and i didnt like it, it looked almost black,
So i went out and got a 'nice n easy' clairol dye, it was a reddish brown colour, and i put it straight on as soon as i got in, and it worked very well, it lightened it and made it all silightly red...but my roots also went brighter.
So i went back, and i got another one, but with more red, and i applied it to everywhere but my roots and it worked perfectly!
